4WALL is a project dedicated to bringing the best contemporary artists and illustrators together in one place for exhibitions, commissions and collaborations.
4WALL HISTORY
4WALL was founded by Sam Stubbings in 2005 after he attended an exhibition of Black Convoy work in Jaguar Shoes. The show was exceptional but the group didn't have a mechanism for commissions or even to buy the work and it was funded solely in the short term by the Arts Council. From that point he decided that he wanted to get the Convoy collective together with his other favourite artists and see if something could exist between a commercial enterprise and an artistically focused exhibiting collective. The answer was that it could and the instinct to refuse branded or briefed work paid off quickly, with London's top agencies and creatives (such as Barbara Hulanicki of BIBA, Chris Blackwell - founder of Island Records, Selfridges, and Stella McCartney) respecting 4WALL's artistic values and commissioning work. We stick to the belief that people not only get turned off by brands and traditional marketing, but that the smart companies in 2006 are the ones that give people authentic entertainment (whether this is music, art, sport or comedy). In short, why script Stephen Fry?
EXHIBITIONS
4WALL exhibits regularly around Europe and the US, with at least two shows on at any one time. Hugely successful collective events in London Bridge, Paris and Edinburgh - and great individual shows in Denmark, Glasgow and Soho - have culminated in a supergroup exhibition being organised this November. Everything 4WALL has learnt about exhibiting, events, and making a show fun will come together for Production Lines so make sure you come. 4WALL events are never dull and we are committed to making exhibitions accessible and enjoyable for everyone - not just the traditional art fraternity.
EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS & COMMUNITY
Despite running creative agencies at Metropolis and Abbey Road Studios, 4WALL founder Sam never thought of himself as an art fan. In fact he hated art and thought it was for posh people. It wasn't until he discovered where drawing, graffiti and graphics convirged in genuine contemporary illustration that he had any interest in collecting or making his own art. He, and the artists he now works with, all believe that if younger people were introduced to this work and shown the basic techniques, they would be much more engaged in art and feel they could make their own statements and images without the expense, expectations or stigma that traditional painting and drawing tends to give rise to. With all this in mind, 4WALL now organises workshops, seminars and activities for young people to introduce them to graphics, stencilling, printing and live painting. If you are interested in this as an educator, parent or community arts person do get in contact. For details of existing projects (particularly in London, SE1 and W3) email art@4wall.co.uk.
4WALL GICLEE PRINTS
Giclee printing made its debut in 1985 and incorporates the technology of digital printing, whereby microscopic ink droplets are precisely positioned onto a surface. In our case this is either 350gms ulstrasmooth acid free fine art paper or high quality matt canvas. Giclee prints offer incredible saturation, depth of color, and a beautifully finished print that captures the essence of the artist’s intent. The Giclee standard insists on the vendor using the highest standard of archival materials, pigment based inks and 1440 dpi resolution printing. If framed under glass out of direct sunlight and humidity, 4WALL can guarantee a life of at least 100 years without fading or degrading.
